The home haircut fiasco.

So Kyle asked me to cut his hair. I have told him over and over that I can’t do it. But he insisted, so I tried….good thing he’s cute with his head buzzed.

There are requirements at my job where we’re supposed to do “continuing education”. I get the idea behind it - they want us to “keep up with the times” and learn new technologies, etc. My problem is that I know what I want to know, I just don’t have any practical objectives in which to apply it. For instance - I really would like to take a stab at authoring an iPhone app, but I can’t figure out a project within my job that would actually warrant one.

I already know how to use Google to find the information I need in order to learn the things I want to know. In short - I have learned how I prefer to learn quite awhile back. Self paced is usually best for me.

On the plus side - they aren’t sending us to a classroom. Unfortunately, I’m not sure what direction they actually expect us to go in. Over the course of my career, I’ve usually stretched and groaned and learned out of necessity. There would be a new project and I would set a goal on using technology X to accomplish it - many times without really knowing exactly what I was getting into. I only knew two things: 1) that it was entirely possible to do and 2) that I was willing to do it.

I guess what I’m saying is: when there’s no pressure to perform for the sake of performing - when there’s nothing at stake… what do I need to do in order to do what’s expected of me? (i.e. LEARN)
